Danger Danger HIGH VOLTAGE

We had an electrical emergency last night.
Everyone in the house has occasionally noticed a dimming of the lights but we never thought much of it. At about 7pm last night they started flickering and didnt stop. We went outside to investiagate if the whole street was affected but everyones lights seemed steady.
Then we heard the crackling and popping noise
and noticed lights coming from under the house
There was actual SPARKS FLYING out of a power box.
So we ran inside and shut down all the computers to keep our preciouses away from nasty power surges and got on the phone to energex. While we waited for them to turn up, I went and raided my parents house for torches.
The first guy arrived and started testing lines with a large pole. He shut off our power for a while and found there was still voltage in the lines. Someone else in the street was earthing out through us! This was a problem with the main electrical connections in the street, not anything to do with our house. We were warned not to touch anything metal in the house like taps shower heads because a current was running though them. A second crew was called.
With a bigger truck, several guys AND a cherry picker

So while they tested all the power poles and power lines in the street we sat in the dark. Well, I sat with my headlamp on, continueing to paint while the other two sat with their nintendoDS and DSlite drawing and sending penises to each other.
Painting by the light of a forhead mounted torch is quite geeky-badical
The house across the road was found to be the culprit and all the wiring should now be fixed and power was restored around 1am.
I wonder how many years that wiring was incorrect for? I also wonder if this explains the problems we had with our tv reception and wireless internet connections.
