Career? caschmeer
2:06 PM Edit This 4 Comments »Ive been looking for a new career direction for a couple of years now.
When I initially started studying at Uni my focus was webdesign and animation but because of the design on the degree I studied a lot of other things pretty unrelated. Which is fine if you still get to progress in the field your most interested in. However, the course changed when a new faculty was added and the degree I was now studying had nothing to do with the degree I began. So I struggled studying subjects I had no real interest in and the change over from one faculty and degree design to the next left gaps in the program. I was repeatedly screwed over where subjects where no longer offered that they still required as prerequisites to progress and had to choose completely different paths. I hated what I was studying, I hated the system and I even hated being on campus so I dropped out. I tried going back but left again within 6 months. I tried again after a break and once again left at the end of the semester.
I'm burned out as far as uni goes, I just want nothing to do with it. Which is sad because after all the heartache and money I don't get to walk away with a degree.
I cant even bare the thought of another attempt.
So Ive been trying to find something else
Something that fits my talents and could hold my interest
Something creative and varied.
Something I could learn in a hands on way
Ive decided I want to become a Jeweler
A girl I know was telling me about her own interest and what was involved in getting an apprenticeship and so on. I realized I knew a few people involved in Jewelery making and started making inquiries on her behalf. The more I looked into it, the more interested I became. This is the career for me.
This is something I could actually do and love.
HOLY CRAP
I also discovered this was a pretty tricky field to get into
You need to find a jeweller who does custom jewellery, not like the ones you find in stores like Wallace Bishop because their stuff comes premade and theres no way to learn the skills there.
Apparently there was only 5 new Apprenticeships offered Australia wide last year.
Well, I start a pre-appenticeship course next month.
Ive also applied for another short silversmithing course to get myself going.

Good Luck!
are these courses expensive?
The short course is about $200 and that covers all materials
The pre-apprenticeship is about $500 and also covers all the materials
I dont know if thats a good rate or not compared to other pre-apprenticeship style courses. Its the only course of its kind offered in Brisbane so I'm not getting much choice in it.
I was hoping for a discount with a healthcare card but I have been informed thats not offered for this one.
Oooooh, that sounds hellaciously fun.
